Anxiety and Psychodynamic Counselling

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is more than simply worrying or feeling stressed. It can affect every part of your life — your relationships, work, sleep, confidence, and sense of wellbeing. You may feel constantly on edge, emotionally drained, unable to relax, or trapped in patterns you cannot fully explain.

For many people, anxiety can show up as:

  • Persistent overthinking or racing thoughts
  • Panic attacks or feelings of dread
  • Difficulty sleeping or switching off
  • Low self-esteem or self-criticism
  • Fear of rejection or abandonment
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Physical symptoms such as tension, nausea, or rapid heartbeat
  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed or disconnected

Sometimes anxiety has a clear trigger. At other times, it can feel confusing or difficult to understand. You may know something is wrong but struggle to explain why.

At Chelmsford Counselling Foundation we offer compassionate anxiety counselling that helps you explore not only your symptoms, but the deeper emotional experiences beneath them.

Anxiety Through a Psychodynamic Lens

Psychodynamic counselling looks at how past experiences, relationships, and unconscious emotional patterns may influence how you feel today.

Often, anxiety develops over time. Early experiences can shape the way we see ourselves, relate to others, and manage emotions. You may have learned to hide difficult feelings, avoid conflict, prioritise other people’s needs, or stay constantly alert in order to feel safe or accepted.

These patterns are not weaknesses. They are often emotional survival strategies that once helped you cope.

However, over time, they can leave you feeling anxious, stuck, disconnected, or emotionally exhausted.

Psychodynamic therapy creates space to gently explore these experiences and patterns with a trained counsellor. Together, you can begin to understand where your anxiety comes from, why certain situations feel overwhelming, and how unconscious emotional conflicts may be affecting your life.

How You May Be Feeling

People living with anxiety often describe feeling:

  • “I can never truly relax.”
  • “My mind is always racing.”
  • “I feel emotionally exhausted.”
  • “I overthink everything.”
  • “I worry people will reject me.”
  • “I don’t understand why I feel this way.”
  • “I feel stuck in the same patterns.”
  • “I feel alone with it.”

You may appear to cope well on the outside while struggling internally. Many people experiencing anxiety feel pressure to stay strong, keep going, or hide how difficult things really feel.

Counselling offers a confidential, non-judgemental space where you do not have to manage everything alone.

How Counselling Can Help Anxiety

Therapy is not about being told what to do or “fixing” you. It is about helping you understand yourself more deeply and creating lasting emotional change.

Through psychodynamic counselling, you may begin to:

  • Understand the root causes of your anxiety
  • Recognise emotional triggers and patterns
  • Explore difficult feelings safely
  • Build healthier relationships
  • Develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion
  • Feel less overwhelmed by thoughts and emotions
  • Improve confidence and emotional resilience
  • Experience a stronger sense of calm and stability

As therapy develops, many clients find they are better able to cope with stress, communicate their needs, and feel more connected to themselves and others.

A Safe Space to Be Heard

One of the most powerful aspects of counselling is having a space where your thoughts and feelings are taken seriously.

Many people with anxiety have spent years minimising their own emotional needs or feeling misunderstood. Being listened to consistently, with empathy and care, can itself be deeply healing.

Our counsellors work collaboratively and sensitively, helping you explore your experiences at your own pace.
